Fun for the Kids!

Inside the Flint Hills Discovery Center, there are spaces specifically designed for children. Kids of all ages will have fun playing within these interactive learning rooms. The Prairie Playscape is a great way for kids to learn about the plants and animals that live among the prairie. Here they can enjoy the various play stations and even climb their way through the tunnel up above the prairie grasses!

The Mezzanine Gallery features a variety of their temporary exhibits that include kid-friendly activities. Flint Hills Discovery Center even hosts year-round children’s programs your child can join, which include their Adventure Camp and Preschoolers in the Flint Hills.

Exhibits Found in Flint Hills Discovery Center

Along with changing temporary exhibits, Flint Hills Discovery Center also has a variety of permanent exhibits. These exhibits will teach you all about the largest intact tallgrass prairie that is Flint Hills.

• Blowing Winds in the Tallgrass Prairie
• Underground Forest

Telling the story of Flint Hill, these exhibits will help you discover the rich cultural history of the area and learn about its unique ecosystem.

Immersive Experience Theater

Watching a movie doesn’t have to just involve your sight and sound. Within the Horizon Ranch Flint Hills Immersive Experience Theater, all of your senses will be engaged. This 15-minute presentation will have you feel the rush of wind through your hair at one moment then see the smoke stream across the floor from a prairie fire the next moment. Through this film, the prairie will come to life right there in the theater!

Prairie Garden Terrace and Trail

In addition to all the fun inside the Flint Hill Discovery Center, there are also outdoor spaces for you to explore. Along your walk, you will find plants and wildflowers that are native to the prairie within their Prairie Garden Terrace.

As you walk along the Prairie Garden Trail enjoying the sights, you will also find 15 informational signs that detail the plants and animals found in the prairie as well as highlight other important topics that pertain to the Flint Hills eco-region.
