Is It Time for a New Set of Tires?

You can only repair those tires so many times. At some point, you’ll just have to admit that their time is up. When that happens, only a new set is going to do.

So, how do you know when it’s time to change your tires? The biggest indicator is wear. Check your tread regularly, using either an inexpensive tread wear gauge or even just a penny. If your tread has worn down to 1/16th of an inch (enough so that you can see the top of Lincoln’s head on your penny), it’s time for a new set. Other common signs of tire wear include:

• Cuts or cracks in your tire sidewalls
• Bulges or bubbles in the rubber
• Excessive vibration in the steering wheel while driving

Preventative Tire Maintenance

Replacing your tires can be a pretty big bit of maintenance. Fortunately, it’s not something that you’ll have to do often as long as you stay up to date on regular tire maintenance. Here’s what you can do to extend the life of your tires:

• Check your tire pressure often, and fill when needed.
• Have your tires rotated and rebalanced with every oil change.
• Stay up to date on your front-end alignment (should be checked annually).
